LiDAR scanners capture the world as a point cloud — millions of individual 3D points rather than a connected surface. 3D Prep Pro accepts .las and .laz (compressed LAS) files, the standard formats produced by LiDAR scanners, drones, and surveying equipment.

Uploading

LAS and LAZ files upload like any other model — drag them onto the upload area or browse for them. There’s no extra configuration step; the point cloud is loaded and processed directly.
A point cloud has no surface of its own. Repairing a LiDAR scan reconstructs a solid, watertight surface that wraps the points, which is what makes it printable.

Repairing

Because the input is points rather than a mesh, repair focuses on building a clean surface from them:
  • The points are turned into a continuous, watertight surface.
  • Floating stray points and noise are cleaned up in the process.
  • Wall thickness and other advanced settings apply to the reconstructed surface, just like a regular model.

Scale matters

LiDAR scans often come in real-world units and can be very large (a building, a landscape). Set a target size with Scale settings so the result fits your printer’s build volume.

Tips

  • Denser scans reconstruct into more detailed surfaces; very sparse clouds may produce a coarse result.
  • If the reconstruction looks noisy, a little smoothing cleans up scanning artifacts.
  • Use Object Info to check the model’s real-world dimensions before scaling.
