VRM is the format used by VRoid Studio and other tools for anime-style character avatars. 3D Prep Pro accepts .vrm files and prepares them for printing with a pipeline tuned for characters.

Automatic handling

You don’t need to change any setting for VRM files. When you upload a .vrm model, 3D Prep Pro detects it automatically and repairs it with the character pipeline — which is built to handle the thin, layered geometry typical of VRoid models (hair strands, clothing, accessories).
VRM handling is based on the file type, so it happens whether or not you touch the smoothing controls. You can repair a VRM model just like any other.

Settings worth knowing

VRoid hair and clothing are often built from flat cards with transparent textures. Cut Transparent Parts (on by default) removes the geometry hidden behind those transparent areas, so your print isn’t full of invisible flat sheets. See advanced settings.
Characters usually look best with a softer surface. Turning on Smoothing — with Pre-smoothing on — reduces faceting on faces, hands, and curves. Leave it off if you want to keep crisp detail.
Fine features like fingers and hair tips can be fragile. A small wall thickness keeps them printable without bulking up the whole model.

Tips

  • The Character model type preset is a good starting point for VRM avatars — it uses a thinner minimum wall thickness to preserve detail and turns on transparent-part cutting.
  • After repair, use the before/after comparison to check that hair and clothing came through cleanly.
  • If separate accessories fuse together, lower the Clearance value.
